Part of a major engineering group, this highly innovate organisation produce low volume, high variation products to blue chip manufacturing facilities around the globe. As a Lead Electronics Engineer, your main objective will be to exploit new electronic component technologies, circuit designs, techniques and tools by creating innovative electronics concepts and solutions enabling the future business needs of all Divisions of the business.
Lead Engineer - Electronics
Location: Multiple work locations available, based around the West Sussex area
Main duties and responsibilities:
O Use specialist electronics knowledge to lead the development of innovative circuit prototypes that solve complex problems and/or demonstrate significant improvement over current solutions: e.g. added-value, better quality and/or reliability, higher performance, lower cost, reduced losses or power, smaller size etc.
O Develop and maintain an electronics technology road-map (e.g. including sensors, actuators, controllers, displays, instruments, interfaces etc.) and derive a series of strategic New Technology Validation (NTV) project proposals
O Manage and deliver the electronics elements of approved NTV projects meeting the agreed VT Technology Group Objectives, Goals, Strategies & Measures (OGSM)
O Identify, acquire and manage any additional resources required to deliver the electronics elements of approved NTV projects: e.g. through the recruitment of permanent or temporary team members, and/or partnering with external third-parties such as academia, consultants, institutions or suppliers
O Maintain awareness of new electronic component technologies, circuit techniques, development tools, standards and Intellectual Property (IP), and how they are being used in key industries: e.g. vacuum, compressors, automotive, industrial control & monitoring, instrumentation & measurement, and Industry 4.0 / Internet of Things
O Clearly document and communicate all aspects of work across the full life-cycle of technology projects: including road-maps, NTV proposals, concepts, detailed designs, test results, IP, application notes, final reports, project plans and status etc.
Knowledge and experience
O Must have detailed knowledge of analogue and digital sensors, and associated signal-conditioning and conversion circuits and design techniques
O Must have detailed knowledge of digital electronics including microprocessors / microcontrollers, programmable logic, memories, and associated circuits and design techniques
O Experience designing with ARM based processors and/or latest generation NXP processors would be a distinct advantage
O Must have detailed knowledge of serial digital interfaces, including I2C, SPI, RS232, RS485, USB, Ethernet
Knowledge and experience of the following data communications buses/protocols would be a distinct advantage: O CANbus, Modbus, EtherCAT, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, MQTT, OPC-UA
O Must have some knowledge and experience of power electronics devices and circuit techniques such as would be used, for example, to derive regulated dc voltage rails from another dc source, and to drive solenoid valves and LEDs.
O Must be familiar with good industry practices of Design for Manufacture, Assembly, Test and Service
O Must be familiar with the Low Voltage and EMC Directives, and designing and testing for compliance with associated standards, e.g. EN61010, EN61326 and EN61000
O Experience with electronics related CAD/CAE tools is expected: OrCAD and PSPICE, and MATLAB or MathCAD would be a distinct advantage
O Experience writing firmware in C, C++ or Python would be useful additional skills
O Must be highly proficient in using Microsoft Office toolsce required:
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced electrical designer to join a world leading manufacturing company at a time of continued growth. A generous salary of up to £58,000 per annum is available based upon skills and experience.
