Novelis Chief Executive Steve Fisher recently commented that he expects that Chinese aluminium producers will provide “very fierce” competition to Western producers over the next decade. Fisher went on to state that he expects that the quality of Chinese aluminium will also increase when speaking at The Reuters Commodity Summit in Seoul.
Aleris are in the process of being acquired by Zhongwang USA LLC in a $2 billion deal and rumours are swirling about other potential deals all the time. It seems inevitable that aluminium and other aerospace materials will more than ever be subject to global market forces.
It would therefore seem prudent for businesses involved in aluminium, however indirectly, to invest in both supply chain and regulatory functions as a matter of priority in order to meet this emerging challenge head on.
