The UK aerospace industry, which has experienced significant growth over the last five years, is expected to continue that momentum and reach US $50 billion by 2016
However what does this mean for businesses in the midlands? The hub of the UK Aerospace Industry?
Technical Network have recruited at all levels of the Aerospace Industry for the last 30 years and been proud members of the Midlands Aerospace Alliance for the last 5.
From speaking to the market place the key trends to keep an eye seem to be
MRO coming to fore – as more people fly more often so the strain on critical components increases
Additive Manufacturing and Composites knowledge - As AM continues to rip up the rulebook on traditional production methods / metrology and composites increasingly dominate Aero structure manufacture specialist materials knowledge becomes key .
Doing more with the same – Whether that be redesigning components to make weight fuel efficiencies or ensuring production methods are as lean as they can be.
Arrival of the Airbus A380
The Midlands seems to be at the epicentre of all the aerospace news this month, with the arrival of The Airbus A380, a huge aircraft, which now flies from Birmingham Airport and is “so large its paint alone weighs half a ton.” As this article demonstrates the majority of the parts were made in Midlands (http://www.birminghampost.co.uk/business/manufacturing/how-big-part-airbus-a380-11073530 ) which makes it fitting that it would fly from Birmingham Airport.
Rolls Royce Derby Expansion Plans
Rolls-Royce have contributed large amounts to the industry saying that since 2009 it has spent just over £1.1bn on the industrial transformation its civil aerospace business alone, with almost two-thirds of that investment in the UK.
John Forkin, managing director at Marketing Derby said: "The news that Rolls-Royce is continuing to grow its Derby footprint is great news for the whole of the midlands. We are also looking forward to the development of the Aerospace Campus and last week we launched the neighbouring Infinity Park Derby Enterprise Zone in which Rolls-Royce is a key partner.”
We would, of course, love to hear your thoughts on where the industry is, where it is going next and what challenges it will have to overcome to get there.
