How are you going to attract the top talent to your business in 2016?

Automotive manufacturing in the UK has seen a healthy growth over the past couple of years and annual new car sales are soon to exceed the 2 million mark demonstrating the strength and success of British Manufacturing in the automotive sector, elevating us to one of the top 5 global manufacturing countries.

JLR, Mini, Nissan and Honda have already announced their intention to add new manufacturing facilities or additional production lines to support their existing facilities further increasing production and boosting the UK economy.

The strength of the £ vs € is also having a major impact on companies and many are returning their manufacturing to the UK as opposed to sending it to the Far East and Central European countries as a cheaper option.

Tier 1 businesses are also booming and several are opening new facilities in the UK and Europe.

All this sounds very promising until we stop and try to work out just who are going to operate these facilities and where the workforce and skill sets are coming from.

We are all aware of the phrase “Candidate Short Market” but what does it mean for you and your business?

In a nutshell the “Talent Pool” in the UK is shrinking faster than an Iceberg suffering from Global Warming. Universities are moving away from Traditional Engineering courses and focussing on Holistic Degrees. Our existing skilled engineers are fast becoming aged and scarce. Good candidates are no longer trawling the job boards looking for that nugget of a job, instead they are content and successfully, gainfully employed in a business where they are stable and secure.

The Birmingham Chamber of Commerce recently reports:

Shortage of skilled workers reaches a 21-year high.

“Recruitment difficulties for Greater Birmingham manufacturers are at a record high” – with an overwhelming 89 per cent of firms facing hiring problems, especially for skilled workers. Figures from the economic survey by Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) for the last quarter of 2015 show that staff recruitment concerns among manufacturers are at their highest level.
