When you say packaging most people’s minds jump straight to bubble wrap but at the ‘Packaging Innovations 2016’ show, we found a lot more than plastic bubbles to keep our imaginations entertained. There was an impressive display of creativity and innovation which displayed the best in the future of labelling, printing and packing technology.
A big topic of the day was eco friendly products and increasing our efforts to contribute to recycling and greener resources. PFF were leading this trend with their recyclable seed pot and sustainable packing solutions. This is a topical issue because amazon have often been criticised for their oversized packaging and excessive paper waste. One company told us that all of their exhibition stand was made of corrugated cardboard and could be easily recycling afterwards leaving little waste behind. To do our bit for the environment, we even blitzed up our own smoothies by using a man powered bike with a blender attachment. The smoothies tasted so much better knowing that we’d earned it!
The show was a chance to show off and get a demonstration of the packaging machines that you wouldn’t normally get to see. From the mesmerising label printers to the precise hum of the laser guided folding robots, there was enough new to inspire any packaging manufacturer. An innovation that you not have expected was a virtual reality headset, just used for fun at the stand but with the advances in design and experience technology, who know how it could be used to create virtual factories or training centres in the future.
As we exited the exhibition hall and treated ourselves to a complimentary coffee and macaron from ‘Le Cafe Graphique’ our minds buzzed around the interesting topics of packing waste and how new technology can help to reduce it in the future. It was great to speak to exhibitors there and we’ll definitely be going back next year!
